The Raptors have exercised their option on Jamal Shead‘s contract for the 2026/27 season, reports Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link).
The move, which will ensure that Shead receives his $2,296,271 salary for next season, doesn’t come as a surprise, given that the 24-year-old has emerged as a regular part of Toronto’s rotation during his first two NBA seasons.
While the Raptors could have turned down the option to sign Shead to a long-term deal as a restricted free agent, they’ll have the opportunity to make him an RFA against a year from now, so there was no need for the club to take that route at this point. He’ll be extension-eligible beginning on July 6.
The 45th overall pick in the 2024 draft out of Houston, Shead has appeared in 157 of 164 possible regular season games since arriving in Toronto, averaging 6.9 points, 4.8 assists, and 1.6 rebounds in 21.1 minutes per contest. The 6’1″ guard, a solid point-of-attack defender on the perimeter, played an increased role in the postseason, making four starts and averaging 32.0 MPG with starting point guard Immanuel Quickley injured.
As our tracker shows, the Raptors will also have team option decisions to make in the coming days on Trayce Jackson-Davis ($2,406,205) and Jonathan Mogbo ($2,296,271).
