Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama is expected to rejoin the French national team ahead of the August qualifying window for the 2027 FIBA World Cup, reports Maxime Aubin of French outlet L’Équipe (subscriber link).
France will play Slovenia on August 27 and Sweden on August 30, notes Johnny Askounis of Eurohoops.
According to Aubin, Wembanyama has resumed physical training in France with his trainer, Guillaume Alquier. The reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year recently signed a five-year, rookie scale max extension with the Spurs that will start at 25% of the 2027/28 salary cap.
Here are a few more notes from overseas:
- Former NBA wing Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot has officially parted ways with Baskonia and has subsequently signed a two-year contract with Real Madrid, according to press releases from the two Liga Endesa and EuroLeague teams (hat tip to Askounis of Eurohoops). The French small forward, whose last NBA stint came with Atlanta in 2021/22, is coming off a career-best season in which he averaged 18.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists on .476/.412/.898 shooting splits in 36 EuroLeague games (25.4 minutes per game).
- As expected, Baskonia has signed Chris Duarte to replace Luwawu-Cabarott, the Spanish team confirmed. The Dominican wing, who was the 13th pick in the 2021 draft, spent last season with Unicaja, which competes in Liga Endesa and the Basketball Champions League. Duarte signed a two-year deal with Baskonia, per the team.
- Free agent forward Isaiah Roby is headed to Italy, having signed a multiyear contract with Pallacanestro Varese (link to team press release). The 45th overall pick in 2019, Roby holds four years of NBA experience. The 28-year-old last played for Ratiopharm Ulm in Germany during the 2024/25 campaign.
