Injury Notes: Mavericks, D. Murray, Haliburton, Bryant
Three Mavericks remained sidelined on Sunday for the team’s second straight preseason game in Macao, writes Grant Afseth of DallasSportsJournal.com. Big men Santi Aldama (right knee) and Dereck Lively II (right foot) continue to recover from their respective surgeries, while guard Marcus Sasser is dealing with left adductor soreness.
Head coach Dusty May gave a minor update on Lively prior to the game, according to Afseth. The 22-year-old center, who’s eligible for a rookie scale extension until October 19, has been limited to just 43 combined games over the past two years, including seven last season.
“I’ll defer to the medical staff on that. I know this, he’s moving well,” May said. “We see him regularly getting treatment, doing things on the court. There’s just a return to play protocol that everyone goes through. It’s a little bit unique, but he’s in good spirits.
“He’s working every day, and whenever he’s back, he’s going to have a major impact on this team.”
Here are a few more injury updates from around the NBA:
- Dejounte Murray didn’t practice with the Pelicans on Saturday after the starting guard was sidelined for Thursday’s preseason contest because of a toe contusion, per Rod Walker of NOLA.com. Head coach Jamahl Mosley said the team was taking a “precautionary” approach to the injury and declined to answer when asked whether Murray would be able to play through the ailment if the regular season was already underway. “We’re just going to keep evaluating him and how he responds to the treatment we’re giving him,” Mosley said. “So right now, to try to gauge whether it is playing or not playing, we’re 10 days into training camp. So I’ll evaluate that once we start to get into regular season games.”
- Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton, who returned to action on Wednesday after missing nearly 16 months with a torn Achilles tendon, tweaked his right ankle during the game vs. Minnesota and underwent an MRI, which came back clean, reports Pacers beat writer Tony East (Twitter links). Head coach Rick Carlisle referred to the injury as a “mild tweak of the right ankle” on Saturday and said Haliburton continues to show improvement, though he was a limited practice participant on Friday. “Just going to be a matter of him working through it,” Carlisle added.
- Second-year Spurs forward Carter Bryant rolled his right ankle in the first half of Saturday’s loss to Phoenix when he stepped on a teammate’s foot, according to Jeff McDonald of The San Antonio Express-News (Twitter links). While Bryant wasn’t on the bench for the second half and was formally ruled out for the remainder of the contest, McDonald doesn’t think the injury is serious and speculates that the team was just being cautious.
