Injury Notes: D. Smith, Fall, Bona, Black, Penda, More
Heat guard Dru Smith suffered a right calf strain during training camp and will be out for at least a couple weeks, tweets Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel.
Based on that timeline, Smith could still make it back in time for Miami’s October 21 regular season opener, but in the short term, it further depletes the team’s backcourt depth, which was already limited. Smith is expected to be the primary backup point guard behind starter Davion Mitchell.
For what it’s worth, the Heat do have an open spot on their projected 15-man regular season roster, and they’ve been linked to veteran point guard Gabe Vincent on and off in recent months. As Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald tweets, Vincent is probably the best option of the remaining unsigned point guards, though it remains to be seen whether Smith’s injury will prompt the club to make a move or whether the front office is content to stand pat for now.
We have a few more health-related updates from around the NBA:
- Sixers center Tacko Fall has been diagnosed with a left hip strain after undergoing an MRI on the injury and will be reevaluated in two weeks, the team announced today (Twitter link via Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports). Fall is in camp with Philadelphia on a non-guaranteed deal but is unlikely to make the regular season roster. He’ll probably end up starting the season with the Delaware Blue Coats, the 76ers’ G League affiliate.
- Another Sixers big man, Adem Bona, will be reevaluated within the next few days as he recovers from a sprained foot, tweets Dave McMenamin of ESPN. Head coach Nick Nurse said on Thursday that he’s hopeful Bona will get on the court at some point during the preseason.
- Magic guard Anthony Black is making his way back from a minor ankle sprain, while forward Noah Penda recently tweaked his hamstring, according to Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel (Twitter links). Although neither injury is considered a cause for concern, Black and Penda aren’t participating fully in the team’s two-a-day practices this week, Beede adds.
- Warriors guard De’Anthony Melton underwent surgery on both of his thumbs during the offseason, he said on Wednesday, per Nick Friedell of The Athletic (Twitter link). Melton added that he’s feeling about 85-90% healthy, according to Friedell, and he expects to play both ends of back-to-back sets this season, says Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area.
- Noting that Jakob Poeltl battled a back injury last season, Josh Lewenberg of TSN.ca suggests it may be an issue the Raptors center has to manage for the rest of his playing career. However, Poeltl spent the offseason working with a new strength and conditioning coach and made some changes to his workout routine to specifically address the back problem. The results have been positive so far, with the big man feeling better – and moving better – this fall, Lewenberg writes.
