Grizzlies Notes: Roster Crunch, Stewart, Grant, Offseason
Having been sidelined by an ankle injury, recently acquired wing Micah Peavy won’t get a chance to make his case for a regular season roster spot during training camp, making him a likely victim of the Grizzlies’ roster crunch this fall, writes Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.
Memphis is carrying 18 players on standard contracts and figures to end up waiving three players with guaranteed salaries before opening night, assuming no trade opportunities arise. Besides Peavy, Siegel views Jordan Hawkins, who was also acquired from New Orleans along with Peavy, and Kris Murray, acquired from Portland in the Ja Morant trade, as the players most at risk of losing their roster spots.
While Siegel says Walter Clayton, who was part of last season’s Jaren Jackson Jr. trade, is expected to get one of the Grizzlies’ 15 regular season roster spots, he notes that the team does have a good deal of backcourt depth, with Ty Jerome, Cam Spencer, and Scotty Pippen Jr. all presumably ahead of Clayton on the depth chart.
We have more on the Grizzlies:
- Within the same ClutchPoints story, Siegel writes that the Grizzlies had coveted Isaiah Stewart for a while before trading for him this summer and would like to keep the big man “well past” the upcoming season. Stewart’s contract includes a $15MM team option for 2027/28. Siegel also says forward Jerami Grant is embracing his role as a veteran leader in Memphis but could be a “prime” mid-season trade candidate.
- As the Grizzlies reshaped their roster over the offseason, finding players who fit the culture the team is building was a priority, head of basketball operations Zach Kleiman said this week, per Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic. “We’re not approaching this like, ‘Oh, let’s just let’s ease our way in and learn.’ Let’s establish an identity. We were very identity-focused this offseason,” Kleiman said. “That’s something that we really set out coming into this build of: Let’s surround these (young) guys with players like Isaiah Stewart, Ty Jerome. I think Jerami Grant is going to help there, as well. Let’s go out and get guys that are gonna be able to contribute immediately to the right ecosystem around these guys and potentially grow with it.”
- Injuries derailed the Grizzlies’ 2025/26 season from day one, as multiple players were recovering from offseason surgeries or battling lingering health issues when camp opened last fall. Head coach Tuomas Iisalo is relieved that hasn’t been the case this time around, noting that key positions were impacted last year, writes Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal. “The biggest difference for us is the health situation at this moment,” Iisalo said. “Last year we had a lot of injuries going into the season at our bigs and our point guards. Really the players who give a lot of structure to the game were missing. This year we’re in a much more fortunate situation, which I would hope helps us in the preparation.”
