The Wizards have re-signed forward Anthony Gill, according to a team press release.

Gill has appeared in 285 games (23 starts) in his six seasons in Washington, averaging 3.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. In 55 games (eight starts) last season, he averaged 5.8 points and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 62.8 percent from the field.

Gill, who turns 34 in October, was signed to a one-year contract prior to last season. Terms were not released on his latest contract but it’s likely to be a one-year deal in the veteran’s minimum range. Washington is hard-capped at the first tax apron.

The Wizards have roster space for Gill — they entered the day with 14 players on standard contracts, 13 of which were guaranteed.

According to Josh Robbins of The Athletic (Twitter links), Gill attended a 9/11 commemoration event with his Wizards teammates last week. The Wizards had kept their final roster spot open in case another team was looking to move off of a guaranteed contract and was willing to include a draft asset such as a second-round pick. Washington’s front office and coaching staff value Gill in part because of the way he treats and mentors teammates and because of his ability and willingness to play off the bench in almost any frontcourt role, Robbins adds.

After going undrafted out of Virginia in 2016, Gill started his professional career overseas, playing in Turkey with Yesilgiresun Belediye in 2016/17 before spending three years with Russian club Khimki, which competed in the EuroLeague at the time. He parlayed his strong international play into multiple contracts with the Wizards, his first and only NBA team to this point.
