The struggling Jazz will have to wait at least two more weeks to get Jusuf Nurkic back in action.
The Jazz provided an update (Twitter link) on the veteran center’s status on Friday after he was re-evaluated by their medical staff for a toe injury on his right foot, which he sustained in the preseason game against Denver on Oct. 4. According to the club, he is making progress and beginning to participate in on-court activities. He will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
Shortly after the injury occurred, the team announced he would be out at least four weeks. He suffered a partial plantar plate tear of the second toe in his right foot.
Nurkic, 32, became Utah’s primary starting center last season after Walker Kessler’s shoulder injury. Nurkic was limited to 41 games, but he made 36 starts and averaged 10.9 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 26.4 minutes per night while shooting 50.3% from the field.
Nurkic, who was acquired in a trade with Charlotte prior to last season, re-signed with Utah on a two-year, $22MM contract in July. He’s making $11.5MM this season and $10.5MM in 2027/28.
With Kessler now on the Lakers and Nurkic sidelined, free agent addition Jaxson Hayes has started five of the team’s eight games at center. The Jazz are off to a 1-7 start and are also missing another key big man, Jaren Jackson Jr. He’s expected to miss at least the remainder of this month after suffering a torn MCL in his right knee four games into the season.
