As the Wizards ponder their options for the top overall pick in next week’s draft, their No. 2 overall pick from the 2024 draft will spend the summer rehabbing from a significant injury.
Wizards forward/center Alex Sarr underwent surgery to repair a fractured right foot on Monday, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports (Twitter link). The injury occurred late last week on a contact play during an offseason workout. He is expected to be fully recovered by the start of next season.
The team confirmed that Sarr underwent surgery in New York.
Sarr was limited to 48 games this past season due to toe, adductor, hamstring, calf and ankle injuries. He was productive when he suited up, averaging 17.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 blocks in 27.2 minutes per game. The 7-footer appeared in 67 games as a rookie when he averaged 13 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 blocks in 27.1 minutes.
Washington could be one of the league’s most improved teams next season with Trae Young, Anthony Davis and the top pick joining its young roster. Sarr’s injury could potentially impact those hopes, at least in the early going. He’ll be eligible for a rookie scale extension after next season.
