Giannis Antetokounmpo is “focused” on joining the Heat but “the Bucks don’t love” Miami’s trade offer, Brian Windhorst of ESPN reported on the network’s Get Up show (hat tip to RealGM).
Windhorst indicated that an Antetokounmpo trade should happen soon but the destination remains unclear, despite Antetokounmpo’s wishes. Windhorst says that trade talks “have intensified over the last 7-10 days.”
Antekounmpo holds some leverage on the talks due to his $62,786,682 option for the 2027/28 season.
“He has focused on wanting to be a member of the Miami Heat. And because he only has one year on his contract, he has some control over that,” Windhorst said. “But the Heat and the Bucks have been talking for months and not agreed to a deal, because the Bucks don’t love the Heat’s offer. There are third teams involved. There are fourth teams involved.”
According to a report from The Athletic last week, Miami is still viewed as the frontrunner. Their current package, according to The Athletic, is expected to include Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., either Pelle Larsson or Kasparas Jakucionis and draft assets that could involve up to three first-round picks. Miami has a late lottery pick in next week’s draft at No. 13.
However, the Celtics appear to be a major threat with Jaylen Brown almost certainly to be part of their offer. Brown could eventually be re-routed to another team in that scenario.
“In recent days, we have seen that the Boston Celtics have shown some interest there,” Windhorst said. “But a Celtics’ offer has a stumbling block: Number one, you would be breaking up, potentially, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Number two, it would mean changing the entire structure of how the Celtics play basketball.”
The Timberwolves, Magic and Trail Blazers have also been named as potential suitors, Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam indicated last month that the team hopes to resolve Antetokounmpo’s future by the start of the draft.
