The Spurs’ arena deal has hit a potential snag. San Antonio’s city council had approved $489MM in municipal bond funding toward the construction of a new arena.
However, the city is facing a projected budget deficit over the next two years. San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones wants residents to reauthorize the city’s portion of arena funding this fall, and the deadline to add the issue to November’s ballot is Monday, according to The Athletic’s Jared Weiss. The San Antonio City Council will hold a meeting Monday morning to vote on whether to place the funding on the ballot, or fall back on the council’s previous approval of municipal bond funding.
Even if the council votes against adding the issue to the ballot, the project’s term sheet stipulates that San Antonio residents must vote again on whether or not to issue city bonds for the first phase of construction.
Here’s more from the Southwest Division:
- The Rockets will be starting their home games a little later than in recent years. After fan feedback suggested a change, Rockets night games will begin at 7:30 p.m. local time rather than 7 p.m., Varun Shankar of the Houston Chronicle relays. Last season, 28 of Houston’s 41 home games had 7 p.m. tipoffs and many fans struggled to reach their seats on time due to traffic congestion.
- ESPN’s Zach Kram gives the Grizzlies front office a B grade for their offseason moves. The Grizzlies reshaped their frontcourt but more importantly they finally moved on from Ja Morant. While noting the Grizzlies received a modest return — Jerami Grant and Kris Murray, with no draft picks included — Kram points out that Morant’s stock has fallen dramatically and the team can now build around lottery pick Cameron Boozer, Cedric Coward and Zach Edey.
- In a subscriber-only story, NOLA.com’s Rod Walker describes how new Pelicans head coach Jamahl Mosley is making connections with fans off the court while trying to improve the on-court product. Mosley was hired in May, shortly after the Magic fired him after losing to Detroit in the opening round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
