Dusty May, who won the 2026 national championship with the University of Michigan, will make the leap to the pros after agreeing to become the Mavericks’ new head coach, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Monday.
A life-long coach at the collegiate level, May has spent the last two seasons with the Wolverines, helping them to their first national title since 1989.
Prior to his time at Ann Arbor, May coached the Florida Atlantic Owls, taking the program to its first-ever Final Four in 2023.
Over his eight seasons in a lead job in the NCAA, May compiled a 190-82 record and never had a losing season.
The Mavericks, meanwhile, have undergone a major facelift this off-season, hiring Masai Ujiri as the team’s new president of basketball operations. In mid-May, Ujiri opted to fire five-year head coach Jason Kidd.
Dallas finished with a 26-56 record last season amidst a handful of injuries to key players and major trades. However, first-overall pick Cooper Flagg, the centrepiece of a new era for the Mavericks, was crowned rookie of the year after an impressive campaign.
