Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson will be placed on injured reserve to undergo surgery on a right thumb injury suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, head coach Jesse Minter announced after the game.
Landing on IR will sideline Jackson for at least four games, but his absence figures to be much longer. Minter said that the injury could “potentially” be season-ending.

Jackson injured his thumb on his first snap back from a three-game absence due to a high ankle injury. He dropped back to pass off play action, hit Bills edge rusher Greg Rousseau on his follow-through, and quickly left the field cradling his throwing hand. Backup Tyler ‘Snoop’ Huntley entered the game, but hurt his toe partway through the second quarter and was ruled out shortly after halftime. Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, Baltimore’s emergency No. 3 quarterback, played the rest of the game despite taking several hits from a ferocious Buffalo pass rush.
Minter said that the Ravens effectively have 24 hours to figure out their quarterback situation ahead of a short week before a Thursday night matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jackson, obviously, will not be available. Minter did not have an update on Huntley, who left the stadium with a boot on his injured foot, per NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe. Fagnano acknowledged that he was not at 100% after some “bumps and bruises,” but “hopes” to be ready to play on Thursday.
In any event, Baltimore will need to add at least one quarterback in the coming days, but at this point of the season, their options are extremely limited. They may have to scour practice squads for an available arm and even consider a trade ahead of next week’s deadline.
