While the Clippers have yet to decide what they’re going to do with the fifth overall pick in next week’s draft, including the possibility of trading down in the top 10, they have “serious interest” in selecting Mikel Brown, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.
Brooklyn is another team that’s high on Brown, with the Nets (sixth pick) viewed as a viable landing spot for the freshman guard out of Louisville, Siegel reports.
The Hawks (No. 8) are intrigued by Brown as well, but it appears unlikely he’ll still be on the board by then, sources told ClutchPoints.
“Watching him in the gym has been incredible,” one front office executive from a team that controls a top-10 pick told ClutchPoints. “His back problems are a thing of the past, and he looks every bit like the second-best guard in this class behind Darryn (Peterson). As soon as you watch him, you can see the star potentially immediately.”
ESPN’s Jeremy Woo, who reported this morning in his latest mock draft that Brown is expected to work out for the Clippers this week, has also heard Brown has been making a positive impression in the pre-draft process.
Woo has Los Angeles taking Keaton Wagler at No. 5 and Brooklyn selecting Darius Acuff at No. 6, but he said Brown appears to be in play at both of those spots. The Kings draft Brown seventh overall in Woo’s mock, though they’re known to covet Acuff should he still be available.
While Sacramento has been publicly announcing several of its pre-draft workouts, the team didn’t last week when it hosted Acuff for a private session with no media availability afterward, sources tell Sean Cunningham of KCRA News (Twitter link).
Woo suggested Brayden Burries is another guard the Clippers are considering, though it’s unclear if that would be in a trade-back scenario or standing pat at No. 5.
Both Siegel and Woo noted that rival teams have had difficulty getting a read on which prospects the Nets have highest on their board.
