Although the expectation remains that Trae Young will stay with the Wizards on a longer-term contract, multiple teams — including the Heat — are considering potential trade pursuits of the four-time All-Star, sources tell Jake Fischer of The Stein Line (Substack link).
Miami is contemplating “big fish” backup options if the team is unable to acquire Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to Fischer, who reports that Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard and Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant are on that list alongside Young.
A trade involving Young would require the 27-year-old point guard to exercise his $49MM player option for next season, per Fischer. He has until June 23 to make that decision.
As Fischer explains, while the Hawks were unable to find much of a market for Young when they traded him to Washington in January, there’s a sense that he could be more appealing to rival clubs looking for play-making in the wake of the NBA’s draft lottery changes, which penalize the bottom three teams by giving them worse odds at landing the top pick. The odds are also flattened throughout the lottery.
Of course, the Wizards were the worst team in the league last season, so they might want to keep Young around for similar reasons. And the eight-year veteran, who was limited to just 15 games played last season, “relished” the warm welcome he received in D.C., Fischer writes.
While it’s been projected that Young could sign a contract in the $40MM per year range, Fischer suggests Young’s market value could be closer to the maximum, given the renewed trade interest. For what it’s worth, Young’s projected max is worth $212.9MM over four years from a rival team and $287.1MM over five years from the Wizards.
