Michigan freshman guard Brandon McCoy Jr. will miss the entire 2026/27 season after suffering an ACL injury in his right knee, the school announced on Tuesday in a press release.

While the Wolverines don’t provide specifics on the diagnosis, they referenced a surgical procedure within their announcement, so it sounds as if McCoy tore his ACL, which often requires a recovery period upwards of one calendar year. The injury occurred during the last game of Michigan’s preseason European tour against KK Mega Basket in Montenegro.

It’s an unfortunate turn of events for both the Wolverines and McCoy, who had widely been viewed as a probable first-round pick in the 2027 NBA draft.

While draft-related projections change significantly over the course of the college season, Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report had McCoy as the ninth player off the board in his early 2027 mock draft. Sam Vecenie of The Athletic had the 6’4″ guard at No. 15 in his initial 2027 mock draft, and he was listed 23rd overall in the first mock published by ESPN’s Jeremy Woo.

A five-star recruit out of high school, McCoy averaged 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 steals per contest during the first two games of Michigan’s European tour against Lithuania’s national team and the Lithuanian B team.

It’s unclear at this point how the injury might alter McCoy’s plans for 2027/28 and beyond.
