The Knicks are among the teams with interest in free agent wing Dalton Knecht, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv, who notes that the former first-round pick remains eligible for a two-way contract (Twitter link).
Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report and The Stein Line previously reported that Sacramento, Minnesota and Toronto were believing to be considering Knecht for a possible two-way spot. Each of those three teams has a two-way opening, but that’s not the case for the Knicks, who have Kevin McCullar Jr., Tyler Nickel and Jaden Akins on two-way deals.
The 17th overall pick in the 2024 draft, Knecht averaged 9.8 points and 2.8 rebounds on .461/.376/.762 shooting splits in 78 appearances (19.2 minutes per game) as a rookie with the Lakers in 2024/25 but his playing time and production dropped off considerably last season, his second in the league. In 54 contests, he averaged 4.2 PPG and 1.4 RPG in just 10.2 MPG, with a shooting line of .455/.342/.727.
Knecht was waived by the Lakers on Monday. Los Angeles was facing a roster crunch and opted to carry Knecht’s $4.2MM salary as a dead money cap hit after the front office was unable to find a suitable trade involving the 25-year-old small forward.
If the Knicks end up signing Knecht to a two-way contract, I’d be very surprised if Nickel is the odd man out, considering he was just selected 47th overall in June’s draft.
