AJ Dybantsa’s regular season debut with the Wizards won’t occur on Friday vs. Toronto, tweets Josh Robbins of The Athletic. The No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft has been ruled out for the second straight contest as he continues to recover from a left ankle sprain he suffered last week in Washington’s preseason finale.
Big man Tristan Vukcevic (left hip impingement) has also been ruled for Friday’s game, while rookie center Felix Okpara is listed as questionable because of an illness, Robbins notes.
Here are a few more injury updates from around the NBA:
- Santi Aldama (right knee surgery), Tarik Biberovic (right heel bursitis), Dereck Lively II (right foot surgery) and Caleb Martin (right thumb sprain) of the Mavericks will all sidelined for the second consecutive game due to their respective injuries, per Christian Clark of The Athletic (Twitter links). Two-way player Jett Howard (right calf soreness) is considered doubtful. As Clark observes, it’s the first of a back-to-back for Dallas, and star guard Kyrie Irving — who missed all of last season while recovering from a torn ACL — isn’t on the injury report.
- After missing the Pacers’ season opener on Wednesday, backup point guard T.J. McConnell will also be sidelined for Friday’s home opener vs. Dallas, the team announced (via Twitter). McConnell is still dealing with a right hamstring strain. Starting wing Aaron Nesmith has been upgraded to questionable with a left hamstring strain, while Ben Sheppard — who was active Wednesday — has been downgraded to questionable with a sore left knee.
- Magic guard Anthony Black was a full participant in Thursday’s practice, which was more of a walkthrough than anything strenuous, head coach Sean Sweeney told reporters, including Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel (Twitter video link). While the former lottery pick is said to be progressing well from his right ankle sprain, he’ll be out again during Friday’s contest against Minnesota after missing the home opener and the entire preseason, according to Beede (Twitter link). Jonathan Isaac (left knee injury management) remains sidelined as well.
