Before heading off to play for the rival Sixers, Jaylen Brown threw an elaborate farewell party on Sunday for Celtics fans, who packed Boston Common for the star-filled celebration, Katie Morrison-O’Day of MassLive writes in a subscriber-only piece.

Brown, who was traded to Philadelphia in early July after 10 seasons in a Celtics uniform, delivered a message to the crowd about what that time meant to him.

“I’m at a loss for words,” he said. “When I came to this city, I said I was going to go to war for this city. I met so many great people here, people that helped me in the community and motivated me on my journey. People who supported me when even I didn’t support myself at times. I just want to say thank you to Boston, thank you to the city, and I love you.”

Dubbed the 741 Frequency Fest, the event featured video highlights from Brown’s career and performances by rappers Joyner Lucas, Lil Baby and A$AP Ferg, who joined Brown for a rendition of their collaboration, “Just Do It.” Brown brought along the 2024 Larry O’Brien Trophy, which went through a crowd surf to give the fans a chance to touch it, along with the NBA Finals MVP and Eastern Conference Finals MVP awards he captured while delivering that title to Boston.

There was also a giant poster that said “Thank you, Jaylen. Love, the city of Boston” and a wall where fans could write messages.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu attended the event and presented Brown with a key to the city along with a commemorative street sign that read “Jaylen Brown Way.”

“I don’t even know what to say,” Brown told the crowd, per Chris Hine of The Philadelphia Inquirer (subscription required). “I don’t do stuff for recognition, but I’m so grateful it’s so many people here. The feeling is mutual. Just know, Boston, I love you.”
