India created history in the second ODI against West Indies in Guwahati on Wednesday, successfully chasing down a massive target of 406 runs to register their highest-ever successful run chase in ODI cricket.
West Indies had posted 405/7 in their 50 overs after centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo. Campbell scored 101 off 68 balls, Hope made 104 off 94, while Jangoo smashed 114 off 77 balls as West Indies crossed the 400-run mark for the first time in their ODI history.
In reply, India chased down the target in just 43.3 overs, winning the match by eight wickets. Captain Shubman Gill led the chase with a spectacular unbeaten 223, while Rohit Sharma also scored a century, making 101 runs.
The victory marked India’s biggest successful run chase in ODI cricket, surpassing their previous record of chasing 360 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.
India also became only the second team in men’s ODI history to successfully chase a target of more than 400. Before this match, South Africa were the only team to achieve the feat, chasing Australia’s 434/4 in Johannesburg in 2006.
The result also gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The record chase capped a remarkable batting display from India after West Indies had earlier produced their highest-ever ODI total.
