The Hornets have made a minor change at the back of their roster, announcing today that they’ve signed free agent forward Trey Townsend and waived forward Josiah Allick (Twitter links).

Charlotte just signed Allick on Monday, using the lone open spot on its 21-man offseason roster to complete the deal. It appears the team will use that spot to rotate players on and off the roster ahead of training camp, either to secure their G League rights or to ensure that they’ll be in line for Exhibit 10 bonuses if they’re cut and then spend at least 60 days with the Greensboro Swarm in the G League — or both.

Townsend, a 6’6″ forward who went undrafted out of Arizona in 2025, had a busy year in 2025/26, spending time with the Köping Stars in Sweden, the Texas Legends and Salt Lake City Stars in the G League, and the Saskatoon Mamba in Canada. In 24 NBAGL outings for Utah’s and Dallas’ affiliates, Townsend averaged 4.6 points and 2.2 rebounds in 18.7 minutes per game.

Rod Boone of The Charlotte Observer (Twitter link) confirms that Townsend received a non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 contract, so it’s a safe bet that he’ll be waived before the season – maybe even later this week – and will report to the Greensboro Swarm in order to earn a bonus worth up to $91K. The Swarm acquired his returning rights from Salt Lake City in a six-team trade in August.
