Eastern Notes: Hawks Opener, Flemings, Sweeney, Walker, Murray-Boyles
The Hawks gave up 132 points to the Grizzlies on Monday and coach Quin Snyder wasn’t happy with his team’s performance, according to Lauren Williams of the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
“We have to know who we are, is really what it comes down to, and that’s collectively defending and running and moving the ball and scoring collectively as well,” Snyder said. “That doesn’t mean guys don’t make plays. We know who our playmakers are, but on both ends, we didn’t feel like a team. That’s how it felt to me, and we know we have been and we will be. That’s also important to know.”
First-round pick Kingston Flemings got an opportunity to start. He had 11 points, two assists and three turnovers in 25 minutes.
“He competed, saw some really good things in space, knocked down shots, picked up, played defense, found some people passing the ball when he got an advantage, and then there’s other things that a 19-year-old rookie, you know, you expect to see room for growth,” Snyder said.
Here’s more from the Eastern Conference:
- Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor hears a lot of positive things about new Magic coach Sean Sweeney but can he get more out of this group than predecessor Jamahl Mosley? O’Connor notes that Sweeney inherits essentially the same roster that Mosley coached and president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman built. Sweeney will have to figure out how to improve an offense filled with shaky shooters.
- Jabari Walker doesn’t have a fully guaranteed contract with the Sixers — he’s owed a $250K partial guarantee — but he’s done nothing to hurt his chances of making the opening night roster and even grabbing a rotation spot, Kyle Neubeck of Allphly.com writes. The reserve forward made a trio of 3-pointers against the Knicks on Monday with a release that looked noticeably faster compared to a year ago. He also pulled down 11 rebounds in just over 19 minutes of action.
- Look for second-year Raptors forward Collin Murray-Boyles to get more playing time this season, Josh Lewenberg of TSN Sports tweets. Murray-Boyles will get more than just backup minutes at the ‘5’ spot. “He’s so good and improved so much that he needs to share the court with (Jakob Poeltl),” coach Darko Rajakovic said. Rajakovic, when asked about his second unit, stated that he trusts CMB, Jamal Shead, Ja’Kobe Walter and Jamison Battle, Lewenberg adds in another tweet. “We know what we can expect from them,” the coach said.
