The Philadelphia Eagles are suddenly dealing with a problem at tight end. Starter Dallas Goedert left the team’s Week 2 game early with a knee injury and additional testing revealed he suffered a sprained MCL and is expected to to miss several weeks.
Whether or not the team decided to put Goedert on injured reserve remains to be seen. If they do go that route prior to Week 3, Goedert will miss at least the following four games:

The earliest he would be eligible to return is for the Eagles’ Week 7 game against … Dallas. (How fitting.)
In the meantime, the Eagles are looking very thin at tight end. Johnny Mundt, who entered the season as TE2, is currently the top option. He’s clearly not much of a pass-catching threat, as evidenced by his career average of 5.7 yards per game. E.J. Jenkins made the roster as a blocking tight end and special teams contributor.
The Eagles currently have two tight ends on injured reserve: Eli Stowers and Grant Calcaterra. Both players are ineligible to return to the active roster until Week 5 at the earliest. And the rookie Stowers didn’t exactly show much promise in training camp (he never even repped with the first-team offense to work with Jalen Hurts) while Calcacterra has developed a reputation as a blocking liability.
The Eagles’ best course of action, it seems, would be to bring Zach Ertz back to Philly. It remains to be seen how much Ertz, who turns 36 years old in November, has left in the tank while coming off an injury that cut his 2025 season short. But prior to getting hurt he still looked pretty capable of making meaningful contributions.
We’ll see how the Eagles end up going about this.
