Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup journey has come to an emotional end. The 41-year-old Portugal captain played what he had already confirmed would be his final FIFA World Cup match as Portugal suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Dallas, Texas.
According to Portuguese outlet Record, Ronaldo was overcome with emotion after the final whistle. He stood silently, looking toward the stands at Dallas Stadium before breaking down in tears, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable World Cup career that spanned six editions, 27 matches and 11 goals.
Portugal matched Spain for much of the contest, but their hopes were shattered in stoppage time when substitute Mikel Merino scored the decisive goal. The Portuguese side pushed for a late equaliser, with Bernardo Silva’s header crashing against the crossbar, while an earlier effort from Nuno Mendes had also struck the post before the defender was forced off with an injury.
Ahead of the knockout clash, Ronaldo had acknowledged that the tournament would be his last World Cup.
“This is my last World Cup. I’m going to give everything I have and enjoy every moment.”
However, the veteran forward’s farewell did not unfold the way he had hoped. Ronaldo completed the full 90 minutes but was largely kept quiet by Spain’s disciplined defence. Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez continued to place his faith in the veteran striker, opting not to introduce Gonçalo Ramos despite his strong performances earlier in the tournament.
After the match, Ronaldo was visibly emotional as he thanked the more than 70,000 supporters inside the stadium before leaving the pitch in tears.
The defeat also extended Ronaldo’s difficult record in World Cup knockout matches. Across 10 knockout appearances, he managed just one goal, a statistic that has often drawn criticism despite his impressive overall World Cup tally of 11 goals in 27 appearances, including three goals during the 2026 tournament.
Record noted that the heartbreaking scene echoed the end of Ronaldo’s previous World Cup campaign, when Portugal were eliminated by Morocco in the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. On that occasion too, Ronaldo left the field in tears.
This time, his final appearance on football’s biggest stage ended in similar fashion—an emotional farewell to one of the greatest World Cup careers in the game’s history, but one that ultimately concluded in disappointment.
