Carlos Alcaraz opened the season capturing his maiden Australian Open crown.
The youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam shared another major aim for the rest of the season: Help Spain capture the Davis Cup.
Meeting the media in Shanghai ahead of his opening-round match vs. Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Alcaraz was asked about his 2026 remaining goals.
The man who claimed the Olympic silver medal for Spain cited winning Davis Cup as his main aim.
“Having the Davis Cup to represent your country, I think it’s great,” Alcaraz told the media in Shanghai. “For me, I’m really grateful for being Spanish, and representing my flag is one of the best things that I can do right now.
“Yeah, as I said many times, the Davis Cup is always one of my main and most important goals every season. I’m excited about going there and playing.”
Alcaraz defeated Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4), 6-4 to successfully defend his Japan Open title with his 10th consecutive victory in Tokyo earlier this week.
Spain will face Austria in the Davis Cup quarterfinals on November 26th in Bologna, Italy. The winner of the Austria-Spain quarterfinal will play either Great Britain or Germany in the November 28th Davis Cup semifinals.
For now, Alcaraz is focused on the Rolex Shanghai Masters. Alcaraz, who missed Shanghai last year, reached the 2024 quarterfinals losing to Tomas Machac.
“Well, it is exciting. It’s been a long time, two years, actually, that I didn’t come here to Shanghai,” Alcaraz said. “I just love the warm welcome they made for me during the practicing today.
“It was a pleasure to see them again. I’m just excited and happy to be back here in the Shanghai Masters.”
