Novak Djokovic transformed his happy space—Beijing’s hard court—into his perfect place.
In the afterglow of winning his record-extending seventh China Open crown, Djokovic vowed to return to Beijing, though he didn’t commit to competing again.
Djokovic led 7-6(3), 0-1 when Alex de Minaur retired due to an apparent adductor injury after one hour, 23 minutes of play in the China Open final today.
Eleven years after his last China Open appearance, Olympic gold-medal champion Djokovic collected his seventh Beijing title. Djokovic raised his Beijing record to a perfect 34-0 capturing his 102nd career championships—and extending his record of winning at least one title to 21 consecutive years.
The former world No. 1 said he’ll be back in Beijing, he’s just uncertain in what capacity.
“I will be back in Beijing, for sure. In which role and how, I don’t know yet,” Djokovic told the media in Beijing. “I don’t know yet, to be honest. I am not making plans for so much ahead right now.
“I’m kind of more really following of how I’m feeling, how good I’m playing, how quickly I’m able to recover. The scheduling sways quite a lot. It’s not as set in stone as it was for 20 years.”
The Grand Slam king defeated three Top 10 players—No. 2 Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals, sixth-seeded Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals and ninth-seeded de Minaur in the final—marking the first time he beat three Top 10 players in the same tournament since winning the 2023 ATP Finals.
Though he’s uncertain about playing the China Open again, Djokovic is hopeful his undefeated record in Beijing remains.
“But I will be back in China, for sure. Let’s see,” Djokovic said. “I don’t know if I’m going to be playing a tournament. I would like to.
“One year is quite a long time right now for me to understand my schedule. But yeah, I would also like this unbeaten run to stay unbeaten. It would be nice.”
