After using the No. 4 overall pick to draft Caleb Wilson, the Bulls have added former Texas swingman Dailyn Swain with their second first-rounder at No. 15.
Although Swain had two solid seasons at Xavier to begin his college career, he wasn’t widely considered a 2026 first-round pick after transferring to Texas. That changed after a big junior year in which the 6’8″ wing put up 17.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.6 steals in 32.8 minutes per game while shooting 54.2% from the floor and 81.5% from the free throw line. He was named the SEC’s Newcomer of the Year and earned a spot on the all-conference second team.
Swain rebounds well, is terrific at getting to the rim, and is a creative finisher, though he has yet to develop a reliable outside shot. In three college seasons, he has attempted just 147 three-pointers and made only 42 of them, for a conversion rate of 29.3%. Continuing to improve that shot will be crucial as he looks to establish himself as a reliable rotation player at the next level.
The Bulls struggled to put pressure on the rim this season, Joel Lorenzi notes for The Athletic (via Twitter). In Wilson and Swain, Chicago has addressed that concern in a major way. Swain was one of the best slashers in college basketball this season and has developed an interesting game with the ball in his hand.
Swain was a very strong defender during his two seasons with Xavier, and while his impact fell off a bit at Texas as his offensive workload increased, the Bulls are hoping that they can combine the best of both worlds.
With Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis as two of the team’s other cornerstones, as well as last year’s rookie Noa Essengue, the Bulls remain light on shooting, but they have built a team with a ton of size, athleticism, and defensive potential, and they should be one of the better transition teams in the league as their young players continue to grow.
