Javonte Cooke, who spent most of last season with the Trail Blazers on a two-way contract, has signed a one-year deal with the Beijing Royal Fighters, agent Jerry Dianis tells Hoops Rumors.
The 27-year-old shooting guard chose Beijing among multiple offers from teams in the Chinese Basketball Association. He also received interest from several NBA teams as a potential training camp invitee.
Cooke, who played for three different Division II colleges from 2017-22, made his NBA debut last November after signing a two-way deal with Portland in October. He appeared in 19 games before being waived in early March.
Although Cooke’s playing time was limited in those contests for the Trail Blazers, he put up big numbers last season in the G League for the Rip City Remix. In 25 total outings for Portland’s NBAGL affiliate, he averaged 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.5 steals in 33.4 minutes per game, posting a shooting line of .449/.351/.738.
Cooke played alongside Yang Hansen with the Blazers, which increased his exposure in China and likely helped generate interest among CBA teams.
Beijing’s roster includes former NBA guard Grant Riller and big man Harry Giles as its other import players.
Cooke was on track to be part of this year’s G League United squad but was replaced by Lester Quinones after he decided to sign with the Royal Fighters. The Royal Fighters and G League United will be two of the teams competing in the Intercontinental Cup in China next month.
