The Dallas Mavericks and the sharpshooter agreed to a buyout, and Thompson now intends to sign with the Heat, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Friday.
Thompson was shipped to the Mavericks in July 2024 after 11 seasons with the Golden State Warriors. In his two seasons in Dallas, he averaged 12.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 38.7 per cent from three in 141 games.
“Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he brought to the Mavericks organization,” Mavericks president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri said in a statement. “We have tremendous respect for Klay and all that he has accomplished throughout his career, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
The four-time NBA Champion joined the Mavericks to team up with Luka Doncic, but the latter was shockingly traded during the 2024-25 campaign. He now gets another chance to join one of the league’s best as he aligns with Giannis Antetokounmpo in Miami.
Thompson is a five-time all-star, two-time all-NBA team member and a one-time all-defensive team member.
The 36-year-old has the fourth most three-pointers in NBA history with 2,899.
