Nearly everyone who watched Darryn Peterson compete in the Salt Lake City and Las Vegas Summer Leagues thought he looked like a “star in the making,” according to Sarah Todd of The Deseret News.

“They should shut him down after this. It’s clear he’s better than this,” one Western Conference scout said during Peterson’s first game in Vegas.

Peterson, a 6’5″ guard whom the Jazz selected No. 2 overall last month, showcased the talent and skills that made him such a highly touted prospect leading up to the draft. Utah is eager to see what Peterson can do in actual NBA games while playing alongside NBA-caliber talent, Todd writes.

Here’s more on the Jazz:

• While there’s currently “no reason” to believe the back spasms Ace Bailey experienced during Summer League action will impact his availability for the start of 2026/27 or be a long-term issue, it “definitely” worried Utah to some extent and the team plans to keep a close eye on his progress from the injury this offseason, per Todd.
• Although overreacting to players’ Summer League performance — good or bad — isn’t wise, the fact that former No. 10 overall pick Cody Williams was participating for the third straight year was noteworthy, according to Todd, who points out that fellow 2024 draftees Isaiah Collier and Kyle Filipowski weren’t on the roster. Overall, Williams’ play this summer didn’t meaningfully move the needle in a positive direction, despite some interesting flashes, Todd adds.
• Zach Harper of The Athletic revisits the 2022 Rudy Gobert trade between the Jazz and Timberwolves, writing that while many viewed the Jazz as coming out on top of that deal early on, it’s clear with hindsight that Minnesota has received more tangible benefits over the past few years. Gobert helped the Wolves make back-to-back Western Conference finals appearances in 2024 and 2025 and played a key role in Minnesota’s first-round victory over Denver this spring. Utah, meanwhile, essentially ended up with Keyonte George, Jaren Jackson Jr. and multiple first-round picks (from the Lakers via the Walker Kessler sign-and-trade) — a strong return, even if it hasn’t helped the Jazz in the standings to this point.
• Former Salt Lake City Stars assistant coach Brenden Morris has been promoted to an assistant coach on Will Hardy‘s staff with the Jazz, the Stars announced (via Twitter).
