The Wizards confirmed in a press release on Monday that they have made a few changes to their coaching staff for next season.
Nearly all of the coaching updates were previously reported, but they have now been made official by the team. The lone exception is that T.J. Sorrentine will be the head coach of Washington’s summer league team in Las Vegas. He has been an assistant coach on Brian Keefe‘s staff for the past two seasons after a long stint as an assistant at Brown University.
As reported by The Athletic, former top assistant David Vanterpool is transitioning to a job in the team’s front office. Current assistant coach Adam Caporn, who’s also the head coach of Australia’s men’s national team, has been promoted to be the Wizards’ new lead assistant.
The announcement also confirms reporting from ESPN that Hall-of-Famer Patrick Ewing is a new assistant coach and longtime former NBA head coach Steve Clifford has been hired as an advisor. Clifford spent last season in a similar role with Phoenix.
Caporn isn’t the only in-house coach being promoted, as Cody Toppert has been named a full-time assistant coach after spending the past three seasons as head coach of the Capital City Go-Go. The new coach of Washington’s G League affiliate is Tevon Saddler, who will also be a Wizards assistant.
According to the team, Toppert led the Go-Go to three consecutive playoff berths and 13 players received NBA call-ups in his three seasons at the helm. Saddler, meanwhile, has been the head coach at Nicholls State for the past three years. Toppert’s promotion and Saddler’s addition were reported by HoopsHype months apart.
