What does the Deion Jones-Zamir White trade mean for the 49ers?

The San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints completed a trade late Sunday night: running back Zamir White to New Orleans in exchange for linebacker Deion Jones. Player-for-player trades aren’t exactly common in the NFL, but what does this trade mean for the 49ers and the linebacker room before the preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night?

Firstly, both players were unlikely to make either roster. The Saints are dealing with multiple injuries in their running back room. Alvin Kamara is likely to miss the season opener, and backup running back Devin Neal suffered a hamstring injury during the preseason matchup with the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday. On top of that, Audric Estime has been dealing with foot discomfort throughout the offseason. Simply put, the Saints need healthy bodies to help the team get to the finish line of cutdown day. Acquiring Zamir White makes perfect sense.

So, what about Deion Jones? Well, the 49ers are also dealing with injuries in their linebacker room. Nick Martin suffered a hamstring injury, and Special Teams ace Luke Gifford is dealing with his own hamstring strain. It makes sense to bring Jones in given his time under Raheem Morris in 2020, and he can bridge the gap to cutdown day for the 49ers.

While it is likely Jones won’t make the 53-man roster, a practice squad stint is also possible. Let’s say the injuries to the linebacker room are more severe and will cost them regular-season time; Jones can be depth at the end of the roster for Morris and the 49ers.

During his time with the Falcons in 2020, Jones had his best season as a player, but it was interesting to note how Morris deployed Jones as a pass rusher. On 85 pass-rushing snaps, Jones recorded 19 pressures, five sacks, six QB hits, eight hurries, and a 75.0 pass-rushing grade, according to PFF, which are career highs.

This player-for-player deal should be interpreted as band aids for both teams, but Jones could stick on the roster and be help for the younger linebackers learning Morris’s system if the injuries to the other linebackers linger.
