It’s mid-August, and that means preseason NFL football is in full swing. A number of former Tennessee Vols are looking for jobs in the league, and among them are two quarterbacks in Joe Milton and Joey Aguilar.
Milton was traded last offseason to the Dallas Cowboys, where he spent the 2025 season on the 53-man roster. Aguilar, of course, was Tennessee’s starter last year, but he ended up losing his attempt at securing an extra year in Knoxville through an injunction. After going undrafted, he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars after the draft.

Milton faces some competition this year for the QB2 spot behind Dak Prescott in veteran Sam Howell. Both players got looks on Saturday for Dallas against the Seattle Seahawks, with Howell drawing the start.
It was pretty much even Steven statistically. Howell went 8/12 for 94 yards with a touchdown and no sacks with a QB rating of 118.1. Milton went 12/15 for 107 yards with a touchdown and no sacks and a rating of 118.6. Each QB let a touchdown drive. That’s pretty close. Both men will get another chance next weekend when Dallas plays at Arizona. It feels like it’s pretty tight at this point.
Meanwhile, Aguilar got very little action for Jacksonville against New Orleans, but boy, did he make the most of it. Down 20-17 late in the fourth quarter, Aguilar threw a deep ball in stride to WR Trebor Pena for a 43-yard gain inside the five-yard line. Jacksonville punched it the next play for a 24-20 lead, which would be the final score.
One pass, one completion, one big gain for Aguilar. His competition for the QB3 job is against Carter Bradley, whose stat line was 10/17 for 107 yards with a touchdown, an interception, and three sacks taken.
The door feels open for Aguilar to challenge him there — if he can get more playing time and make the most out of it next week against the Panthers at home.
