The Steelers hosted nine players for a tryout on Friday, PennLive’s Nick Farabaugh reported, including two former third-round picks in linebackers Chad Muma and Marte Mapu.
Muma started his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022, but spent 2025 playing for the Colts and later, the Patriots. He’s largely played on special teams as of late, but has seven starts on defense over his career, with his most recent coming in 2024. He has 103 career tackles. Muma scored a 9.79 RAS coming out of college.

Mapu is also a recent Patriot, drafted by New England in 2023. He recorded nine starts on defense in 2024, logging 46 total tackles, six passes defensed and an interception. But in 2025, he saw most of his snaps on special teams. Mapu was largely a box safety in college, but was knocked for a lack of “short-area athleticism and long speed” pre-draft by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein.
Besides Muma and Mapu, the Steelers also worked out edge rusher Cameron Sample, offensive tackles Tomas Rimac and Andrew Coker, centers Gus Hartwig and James Brockermeyer, running back Terrell Jennings and defensive back Miles Battle.
The Steelers did not immediately sign any of the players they worked out on Friday, but do have spots open on the practice squad following the signings of Travis Homer and Doneiko Slaughter to the 53-man roster.
