There’s still no timeline for Dominick Barlow’s return, head coach Nick Nurse told reporters on Tuesday, per Derek Bodner of PHLY Sports (Twitter link). Barlow, traditionally a power forward, could be in the mix for backup center minutes once he’s healthy, but back soreness has kept him on the shelf for most of training camp and all of the preseason so far.
While Barlow didn’t practice on Tuesday, Anfernee Simons (hamstring) and Adem Bona (foot) were partial participants, according to Bodner (Twitter links). Philadelphia only has one preseason game left – on Friday vs. Boston – and while it doesn’t sound like Barlow will be ready for that contest, Nurse said there’s “some hope” that Simons and/or Bona will be available.
We have more on the Sixers:
- Talent won’t be the issue for a loaded Sixers team this season, according to Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who suggested on Monday that the team’s ceiling will be determined in large part by how several big personalities mesh. “Our chemistry is gonna be the biggest part for us,” Caldwell-Pope said, per Kris Rhim of ESPN. “Us liking each other, being able to be around each other and have fun on and off the court. … We have so much talent from one through 12, or 15, however many guys we’ve got, and it’s talent everywhere. I think our biggest thing is just communicating with each other, learning each other’s tendencies, and just trying to implement that on and off the court.”
- As first reported by Marc Stein (Substack link), the 76ers have hired Brad Jones as the general manager of their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, the team announced today in a press release. Jones, not to be confused with the Bucks assistant coach who shares the same name, has spent the past eight years in the NBA G League office and previously worked in scouting and video roles for the Magic. Sixers general manager Jameer Nelson – who was involved in selecting Jones for the role, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin and Rhim – played for Orlando while Jones was with the organization.
- The Blue Coats also announced that CJ Marchesani has been named the assistant GM for the G League squad after having spent the four seasons in the Sixers’ scouting department.
- In a feature story for The Ringer, Yaron Weitzman profiles Sixers president of basketball operations Mike Gansey, the veteran executive whom “everybody likes” — and the one largely responsible for a memorable offseason that saw the team land Jaylen Brown and LeBron James.
