As bad as it was last Monday, the Denver Broncos season is far from over. And, frankly, it might just be a Sean Payton type September again in 2026.
Since coming to Denver in 2023, he has led the Broncos to a 52-32 overall record in the regular season. In September, however, he is a woeful 4-8 in that span — well below his .615 win percentage here in Denver. Even in his last four season with the New Orleans Saints it wasn’t pretty in September. Despite going 13-3, 13-3, 12-4, and 9-8 in those seasons, the team still lost five games in September.

It gets even worse when the team is average or slightly above average. The previous four years before that good run the Saints had a run of mediocrity. The team went 7-9 for three straight seasons before an 11-5 playoff season. In that four year span, the Saints were 2-12 during the month of September. Woof.
For whatever reason, Payton-led teams stumble out of the gates in most seasons. The best seasons he puts on record still has at least one early loss. Last season, Denver started 1-2. Maybe more of the same this season?
Hopefully the win comes first, because an 0-2 start would not be ideal. I’m already looking forward to October, though, given the data I just reviewed here today.
