Although Rockets general manager Rafael Stone suggested after the team was eliminated from the playoffs that he was happy with the roster he assembled last season, injuries notwithstanding, evidently that stance changed to some degree after watching the Western Conference and NBA Finals, according to Kelly Iko of Yahoo Sports.
As Iko writes, watching those series between the Spurs and Thunder and Spurs and Knicks convinced Houston’s brass that the team is “a ways away” from being a top contender within its own conference and for an NBA title. That viewpoint has made the Rockets more open to trade possibilities up and down the roster.
Opposing teams who have been in recent contact with Houston have been told that Amen Thompson “is the only near untouchable” Rocket, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.
Iko clarifies that the Rockets aren’t actively looking to move All-Stars like Alperen Sengun or Kevin Durant or other “key members” of the team. However, Houston hasn’t shut down inquiries on those players and appears willing to entertaining different scenarios rather than simply running back the same group.
According to Iko, several teams — including the Lakers and Nets — have expressed interest in restricted free agent forward Tari Eason, whom the team hopes to re-sign. Iko says some of those clubs have tried to get a feel for whether the Rockets might be open to a sign-and-trade involving the 25-year-old.
Iko also hears the Rockets hope to be active in free agency with an eye on upgrading their bench. In order to increase their spending power, Dorian Finney-Smith is viewed as a logical trade candidate. Sources tell Iko that the veteran 3-and-D forward has drawn “reasonable interest” around the league even though he’s coming off a career-worst season.
Houston plans to resume rookie scale extension talks with Thompson after this week’s draft, per Iko.
