Former Jazz and Celtics two-way player RJ Luis was granted a temporary injunction on Monday by a judge in Louisiana, paving the way for him to potentially play for LSU in 2026/27, writes Myron Medcalf of ESPN.

A 6’7″ guard/forward, Luis was named Big East Player of the Year in ’24/25 with St. John’s and declared for the 2025 draft as an early entrant. He wasn’t selected last year and ended up signing a two-way contract with Utah in July 2025.

The Jazz traded Luis to the Celtics the following month and appeared in three preseason games prior to being cut by Boston in October 2025. The 23-year-old wing re-signed with the Celtics on an Exhibit 10 contract to secure a bonus for suiting up for their G League affiliate in Maine, but an injury caused him to miss all of last season and he never played in the NBAGL.

The NCAA will likely fight to prevent Luis from competing during the upcoming season, Medcalf notes. There’s no real precedent for a player in Luis’ situation, since he didn’t actually play in a regular season game in the NBA or the G League. But the NCAA fought a case against Charles Bediako (Alabama) last season after he was similarly granted a temporary restraining order, which was eventually overturned.

According to Brett Martel of The Associated Press, when East Baton Rouge Parish District Court judge Ronald R. Johnson ruled in favor of Luis, he said, “In the court’s mind, (Luis) did not actually play professional basketball,” and that whether Luis was properly advised of his options at the time he left college “lingers heavily before this court.”

In an unrelated case, former Missouri star Mark Mitchell, who reached a tentative Exhibit 10 agreement with the Nuggets prior to going undrafted in June, recently committed to Kentucky, Medcalf reports. Mitchell is one of many undrafted free agents who were recently granted a fifth year of college eligibility.

The NCAA fought against Mitchell returning to college but he was granted a temporary restraining order by a judge in Kentucky, Medcalf adds.
