Steve Kerr’s time in Golden State isn’t up just yet.
The head coach has agreed to a new two-year deal to remain with the Warriors, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Saturday.
It appeared Kerr’s time with the franchise was nearing an end after the Warriors missed the playoffs for the second time in three years, but after deliberations with the front office, he decided to return, per Charania.
The new deal will keep Kerr as one of the highest paid coached in the NBA, Charania adds.
Kerr has been with the Warriors for 12 seasons, guiding them to four championships, 604 victories and helped set the NBA record with a 73-win season in 2015-16.
Kerr sits 28th on the all-time wins list, while his .631 win percentage places 17th. He ranks sixth in playoff wins with 104 and his .684 playoff win percentage is second only to Phil Jackson (.688) for coaches with at least 100 playoff games under their belts.
Along with the star trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, Kerr’s Warriors defined an era of basketball while picking up championships in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2022.
First taking the reins of the Warriors in May 2014 after Golden State fired Mark Jackson, Kerr immediately made an impact as the Dubs sported the best record in the NBA that season with 67 wins and won the NBA title thanks, in part, to Kerr unleashing Curry to the first of his back-to-back MVPs.
Kerr was named coach of the year in 2016 and has also won two Olympic gold medals as an assistant with the 2020 team and then at the helm of the 2024 squad.
He will now get the chance to bring the Warriors back to the level of greatness they were at for the better part of the last decade.
