The Pelicans plan to sign Caleb Houstan to a one-year contract, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, who reports (via Twitter) that the free agent wing will be competing for New Orleans’ final standard roster spot.

While he doesn’t state it outright, Scotto’s wording suggests Houstan’s contract will be non-guaranteed. The Pelicans currently have 14 players on guaranteed standard contracts. Houstan will likely be competing with Kobe Bufkin and Christian Koloko — who are both signed to non-guaranteed training camp deals — for the 15th spot.

A 6’8″ small forward who was selected 32nd overall in the 2022 draft, Houstan spent three years on a standard contract with Orlando prior to becoming a free agent last summer. He initially signed an Exhibit 10 training camp deal with Atlanta but was promoted to a two-way contract shortly before 2025/26 began.

Although Houstan’s role with the Hawks last season was very modest, he was promoted to a standard contract in February before being waived in early April to make roster space for Tony Bradley. Atlanta was looking for a backup center at the time due to an ankle injury to Jock Landale.

Houstan averaged 4.1 points and 1.5 rebounds in 168 games with the Magic (14.4 minutes per game). He averaged 4.2 MPG in 18 appearances with the Hawks in 2025/26, and also made 34 G League appearances (33.4 MPG) with the College Park Skyhawks, averaging 16.3 PPG, 4.4 RPG and 2.2 APG.

The 23-year-old Canadian, who played one year of college ball at Michigan prior to being drafted, is known as an outside shooting specialist: 84.4% of his career field goal attempts have come from behind the arc, and he has made 37.8% of those three-point tries.

Houstan, who is no longer eligible for a two-way contract, will be reuniting with former Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley, who was hired to be New Orleans’ new coach after being fired by Orlando, Scotto notes.
