Week 8 of NFL action gets underway tonight, with yet another NFC matchup in primetime. If you’ve lost count how many night games have featured NFC team exclusively, you’re not alone. It’s been an interesting schedule, to say the least, and they’re going to continue shoving the NFC down our collective national throats.
It’s true the Carolina Panthers haven’t had a great share of the national spotlight in recent years, but this season corrects that oversight for a 3-3 Panthers team that currently leads the NFC South (really).

If the networks didn’t force every last NFC East matchup on fans, there might be more opportunity for the AFC to shine on the biggest stage. You see, tonight’s game is the meat sandwiched between a pair of awful NFC East “rivalries” in last Monday’s Philadelphia Eagles-Dallas Cowboys game, and this coming Sunday night’s Eagles-Washington Commanders game. That’s two marquee games in the span of a week featuring a quarterback I’m almost certain 99% of NFL fans can’t name.
You might have wondered why no article/open thread for that Philly-Dallas game last Monday. Because: Truly. Terrible. Football. But I digress…
Here we are, yet again tuning in because even bad football is impossible to ignore. Is that selling the Packers and Panthers short here? Not intentionally, but the reality is that this is a last place 4-3 NFC North team hosting a 3-3 team few are sure about, and doing it in the spotlight. Both teams really need a win tonight, but for vastly different reasons. For the Pack, it’s to hopefully begin clawing out of the base, while the Panthers need to keep ahead of their closest competition, the Atlanta Falcons, in a frequently messy division.
Maybe my sardonicism nudges tonight’s game in the right direction, pushing this one into “game of the season” territory by evening’s end. There’s always the scouting angle, with Green Bay on the Buffalo Bills’ schedule later this season.
With that, here’s your open thread for Week 8 of Thursday Night Football. As always, be kind to one another — and in all things… Go Bills!
