Gael Monfils – the man, the myth, the legend – said goodbye to fans in Paris in an emotional ceremony on Tuesday night in Paris.
The impossibly gifted showman, one of the most adored players of his generation, elected not to compete in Paris this year, but did show up in good spirits as he was feted by his faithful fans in Paris. Monfils was joined on court by fellow musketeers Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon, as well as Benoit Paire.
The Paris crowd showered Monfils with affection, unfurling a giant “Merci Gaël” banner and chanting “Lamonf” as the beloved Frenchman soaked in the moment.
“I’m not going to hide that, this is a very difficult moment to say goodbye,” Monfils said in his native French. “22 years now that I’ve been a professional tennis player. 22 years of an extraordinary story that I could have never dreamed of.”
Monfils, who acknowledged going through a difficult personal period in recent months, thanked the fans who had supported him throughout his career.
“I want to thank everyone, whether they’re here or at home, because it’s because of you that I could realize my dream.”

The most touching moment of the evening came when Monfils addressed his four-year-old daughter Skai, revealing that she had insisted he mention her during the ceremony.
“Skai, your father was a tennis player,” he said. “He loved tennis. He grew up in Paris, where he had a magnificent crowd behind him. I hope, from the bottom of my heart, that you will become a great champion in everything you do.”
Monfils also thanked his parents, Rufin and Sylvette, before taking a final lap of honor around the court, soaking up the applause and affection of the Paris crowd.
