The Nets are using the 28th overall pick to add Iowa State forward Joshua Jefferson. The Timberwolves made the pick on behalf of Brooklyn, since it’s included in the three-team trade that will also send Julius Randle to the Nets. That deal is not yet official.
Unlike many of the first round selections, Jefferson developed his game through four years at the collegiate level. He spent his first two seasons with St. Mary’s, earning a starting spot in his sophomore year. He then transferred to the Cyclones and started 70 games over the past two seasons.
His production ramped up throughout his college career. As a senior, Jefferson averaged 16.4 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 4.8 APG and 1.6 SPG in 30.9 MPG. He started to develop a three-point shot, making 34.5 percent of his attempts, and was selected to the Associated Press’ All-America second team.
Jefferson will compete for minutes behind Randle and Michael Porter Jr. As his college stats would suggest, he’s a versatile player who could develop into a viable secondary play-maker in the NBA as a point forward.
The Nets selected Louisville guard Mikel Brown with their lottery pick at No. 6. That gives Brooklyn seven first-round picks on its roster over the last two drafts.
