The Nets and Day’Ron Sharpe have agreed to push back the decision on his $6.25MM team option for next season from Sunday to Monday, according to Brian Lewis of The New York Post (Twitter link). The extra day gives Brooklyn a little more flexibility to decide how to handle Sharpe’s contract.
Sharpe is expected to have a larger role with the team next season, so it’s unlikely that the Nets will consider declining the option and making him a free agent. A recent report said that his emergence factored into the decision to send Nic Claxton to Chicago in the three-team trade that brought back Julius Randle from Minnesota. Brooklyn may be considering its financial options ahead of offering a long-term deal to Sharpe.
The 24-year-old center/forward is coming off his best NBA season, averaging 8.7 points and 6.7 rebounds in 18.7 minutes per night in 62 games (seven starts). He shot 60.1% from the field, but continues to have limited range, connecting at just 23.1% from beyond the arc and attempting a three-pointer roughly every other game.
Sharpe is the longest-tenured player in an organization that has been marked by frequent roster turnover in recent years. He was selected with the 29th pick in 2021 and was acquired in a draft-night trade with Phoenix.
The Nets have a few other financial decisions to make, which could be why they asked Sharpe for the extra day. They also hold team options for next season on Ziaire Williams ($6.25MM), Josh Minott ($2.58MM) and Malachi Smith ($2.15MM).
