Daniil Medvedev may well stick with his streamlined coaching box next season.
Fresh off his win over buddy Andrey Rublev in the Hangzhou on Tuesday, Medvedev continuing his winning ways in Beijing today.
Former No. 1 Medvedev beat qualifier Pablo Carreno Busta 6-4, 6-2 for his fifth straight win at the China Open.
Afterward, Medvedev said there’s a “big chance” he will retain new coach Andrey Golubev for the 2027 season. The pair began working together during the North American summer season. Medvedev says it’s been a productive partnership so far.
“We’ll decide at the end of the year, but I think there is a big chance, yes,” Medvedev told the media in Beijing. “But since I cannot tell you 100%, I’m not going to say 100%. I think there is a big chance.”
World No. 6 Medvedev started the season working with former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson and veteran Rohan Goetzke. In fact, both ex-coaches are still listed as his coaches on his ATP player page as of today.
Medvedev split with Johansson after Wimbledon and continued working with Goetzke before parting. Former Top 40 player Golubev joined Medvedev for the North American hard-court season in a pairing the former US Open champion says is working well.
“Talking about Andrey, it’s working good. The best work you can do is pre-season, like the most important work where you can actually feel the most from the coach, from yourself,” Medvedev said. “Still we passed a tough period in the beginning of our relationship.
“I lost a couple of matches in USA. Was not feeling well. I feel like we’re on the right path. So far enjoying it a lot.”
