Jets showing interest in Mike Tomlin, Lamar Jackson in 2027, says NFL insider

The 2026 NFL season officially kicks off in just over two weeks. For fans of some teams, however, they already have one eye on 2027.

One of those teams is the New York Jets, who are coming off a three-win season in 2025 and currently have a head coach in Aaron Glenn who may be sitting on the hottest seat in the league. Should this season go south for the Jets, no one would be surprised to see them move on from Glenn, and NFL insider Jason La Canfora reports that owner Woody Johnson is already showing a ton of interest in former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

“Woody is starting to ask a lot of questions,” La Canfora reports. “He’s doing his homework on Tomlin, this one has legs. Mike is in New York at Rockefeller Center for NBC, Woody is back in charge at the facility, and he knows how steep the competition will be. You are going to hear a lot about the Jets.”

Not only do the Jets have interest in the former Steelers head coach, they are also monitoring the situation between Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.

“A potential Tomlin hire could immediately trigger secondary moves across the league, with conversations pointing toward a pursuit of two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson,” La Canfora writes. “Jackson enters a high-stakes stretch with his long-term future in Baltimore unresolved amidst ongoing contract negotiations. Representing himself, Jackson’s current deal carries an $84.5 million cap hit for 2027, alongside standard no-trade and no-tag clauses.”

“Multiple league executives believe Jackson could explore potential trade avenues following previous extension standoffs. If Tomlin takes the reins in New York, where the Jets boast premium draft capital—including three first-round selections—there is a belief Jackson would strongly evaluate the destination. The pair share a deep mutual respect built over years of AFC North battles, and New York’s defensive core provides an immediate foundation for a contender.”

As La Canfora points out, the Jets have the draft capital to make these moves happen, as they hold the Dallas Cowboys‘ first-round pick in 2027 , which they acquired in the Quinnen Williams trade. They also hold the Indianapolis Colts‘ first-round selection after trading away Sauce Gardner.
