Heat Notes: Jovic, Thompson, Wiggins, Johnson, Giannis
Nikola Jovic admitted he got complacent after signing a four-year, $62MM extension prior to last season, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald relays. Jovic made those comments in an interview with Miami radio host Brendan Tobin.
“I wouldn’t say I was the smartest guy last year handling things outside of the court,” Jovic said.
Jovic’s production dropped across the board last season and he shot just 36.6 percent from the field.
Klay Thompson stated to Tobin that the presence of Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo was a major influence on his decision to join the Heat after his contract buyout with Dallas.
“Bam and Giannis — they’re the perfect modern-day bigs. Huge part of the reason I’m here,” he said. “You always want to be surrounded by great talent. I’ve been blessed to go through a career of being with great talented teammates and Miami just fits that more than ever.”
Here’s more on the Heat:
- Thompson is also happy to reunite with former Golden State teammate Andrew Wiggins, Jackson writes. “It’s a joy to be around Andrew,” he said. “He’s one of the most low-maintenance All-Stars I’ve ever been around. He’s unflappable.” Wiggins is just as pleased to get another chance to play with the former Splash Brother. “Having Klay here has been great,” Wiggins said.“Klay brings so much to this team, a guy with four championships. The ultimate Finals and championship experience, fiery competitor. I’m happy to have Klay on this team and be on a team where the energy is different now.”
- Two-way player Keshad Johnson will be out for a few weeks due to a right hamstring strain, the Sun Sentinel’s Ira Winderman tweets. Johnson appeared in 32 games off the bench last season.
- Antetokounmpo holds a $62.8MM option on his contract for next season and isn’t sure what his future holds with the franchise. He declared he wanted to make a lasting impact, regardless of how long he plays for the Heat, Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald tweets. “I want to know when this chapter is over, if I’m going to be here for a year or two or whatever it’s going to be, I want to leave my mark,” he said.
