After being traded from New Orleans to Memphis on Tuesday, former first-round pick Jordan Hawkins will likely get “a chance to stick around” and compete for a spot on the Grizzlies’ 15-man regular season roster, NBA insider Jake Fischer said during his latest live stream for Bleacher Report (video link).

If the Grizzlies do end up waiving Hawkins, there would be several teams around the league interested in taking a shot on the 24-year-old wing, according to Fischer. It’s unclear whether those clubs would be prepared to award Hawkins a standard contract and a regular season roster spot or if he’d be a target for a two-way deal.

The Grizzlies are facing a roster crunch this fall, with 19 players on standard contracts for 15 roster spots. Besides Hawkins, Fischer views D’Angelo Russell, Kris Murray, Walter Clayton Jr., and Micah Peavy as the players who are most at risk, noting that forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper should be safe.

• The Cavaliers and free agent guard Gabe Vincent were in contact earlier in the offseason, but he’s no longer in play for the Cavs now that they’re right up against their first-apron hard cap, per Fischer. Vincent was also said to be on the Kings’ radar before they signed Ben Simmons, though Fischer suggests that the 30-year-old guard wasn’t clamoring to join the rebuilding club. “I was told that Gabe Vincent wasn’t exactly itching to go to Sacramento, but that there was some mutual interest there,” Fischer said.
• For what it’s worth, while we’re still waiting on the exact details of Simmons’ new one-year, minimum-salary contract with the Kings, Fischer referred to it in passing as a “non-guaranteed” deal.
• While Fischer still views the Hornets as a potential suitor for Kings center Domantas Sabonis, he notes that it could be tricky for Sacramento to make a deal until Sabonis returns to the court and starts to look like his old self after an injury-plagued 2025/26 season. As Fischer explains, the Kings believe they should receive positive value in any Sabonis trade, whereas possible trade partners are wary of the $94MM he’s owed over the next two years after he played just 19 games last season due to knee problems.
