Dwane Casey could be returning to the head coaching ranks but not in the NBA.

Casey, who was most recently a head coach with the Pistons from 2018-23, has emerged as a head coaching candidate for BC Roma SPQR, which is bidding for a franchise in Rome in the upcoming NBA Europe league, Marc Stein of The Stein Line tweets. NBA Europe is scheduled to have its inaugural season in 2027/28.

The NBA Board of Governors will soon determine which bidders receive franchises in NBA Europe. BC Roma SPQR was recently co-founded by former Mavericks GM Donnie Nelson along with Lakers superstar Luka Doncic. Casey was an assistant coach in Dallas from 2008-11 during Nelson’s stint in Dallas’ front office.

The BC Roma SPQR club will participate in the EuroCup basketball season, which begins in late September. The club is also weighing European candidates for its debut Serie A season, Stein adds.

Casey, 69, underwent a rebuilding project with Detroit after coaching Toronto from 2011-18. He stepped down from the Pistons’ head coaching position after the 2022/23 season but was retained by owner Tom Gores as a special adviser.
