Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have appointed former India left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan as their head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season.

Zaheer will take over from Stephen Fleming, who served as CSK’s head coach from 2009 to 2026, bringing an end to his long association with the franchise. Fleming has since taken up the role of England men’s Test head coach.

Zaheer, a member of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning team, has held several coaching and cricket management positions since retiring from the IPL in 2017. He previously served as Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket Operations and later as the franchise’s head of global development. He also worked as a mentor with Lucknow Super Giants.

As an IPL player, Zaheer represented Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. He played 100 matches in the league and took 102 wickets at an average of 27.27. Across international cricket, he claimed 610 wickets for India in all three formats.

Speaking about his appointment, Zaheer said it was an honour to join one of the most successful teams in IPL history. He also recalled his experiences playing against CSK and said the atmosphere created by the franchise’s fans at Chepauk made the opportunity particularly special.

CSK owner Rupa Gurunath said Zaheer’s distinguished playing career and experience in nurturing young talent made him a valuable addition to the franchise. Managing Director Kasi Viswanathan also praised his cricketing knowledge and his contribution to India’s success during the 2000s.

Zaheer’s appointment marks a major change in CSK’s coaching setup as the five-time IPL champions prepare for the 2027 season.
