The future may be complicated for one Pro Bowl Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher. T.J. Watt signed a new deal to pay $41 million per year before week one last year, and Nick Herbig inked a four-year, $100 million contract this offseason.

Needless to say, it puts Alex Highsmith in a difficult position. With two years remaining on his contract, Highsmith remains a valuable part of the highest-paid defense in football. His future could also be in doubt after the Steelers committed more money to two players at the same position over the last two offseasons. Regardless, Highsmith said after practice on Friday that he wants to remain with the Steelers his entire career.

“That’s my dream,” Highsmith said. “I do want to be a Steeler for life.”

Highsmith will turn 30 next week and is entering his seventh season in Pittsburgh. In 90 games, Highsmith owns 45 sacks, 337 tackles, 10 forced fumbles, 10 passes defended, and three interceptions. 

Despite the uncertainty, Highsmith is focused on this season and getting the Steelers back over the hump. 

“I just want to go out there and do whatever I can to help bring another Super Bowl to this team and city,” Highsmith said. “I do want to be a Steeler for life, so for me, I’m just excited for this year.”

The outside linebackers are the deepest and most talented group on the roster. 

“Our group, we’re the best group in the league edge-wise. The three of us and Jack (Sawyer),” Highsmith said. “I think we’re going to do some special things.”
